How to Create a Comic Book Text Layer Style in Photoshop

In this tutorial, we'll be creating a 3D comic book text effect using Adobe Photoshop CC and the Komika Axis font from DaFont's Vigilante Typeface Corporation. We'll use duplicating layers, halftones, and layer styles to give our text a comic book feel.

To start, create a new document in Photoshop by clicking on 'File' > 'New.' Name your document something like 'Comic Book Text Effect,' and set the dimensions to 2000 pixels by 2000 pixels. You can use any resolution you prefer, but for this tutorial, we'll be working with pixels.

First, let's create our text layer. Use the Type tool to create a new text layer, and type in your desired text (in this case, 'POW!'). Make sure to select the Komika Axis font and set the font size to 125.5 points.

Next, duplicate your original text layer by going to 'Layer' > 'Duplicate Layer.' Move the duplicated layer five times to the right and five times downward using the arrow keys.

Now, let's add some layer styles to our original text layer. Select the original text layer and go to 'Layer' > 'Layer Style' > 'New Layer Style.' In the Layer Style window, select 'Komika Axis' as your font style and set the color to #000000 (black).

To create a bevel effect with a stroke, select the Brush tool and choose a halftone brush. Place the brush in your document as shown below.

Next, create a new layer by clicking on 'Layer' > 'New' > 'Layer.' Fill this layer with any color you prefer, and set the fill to 0%.

Double-click on this layer to bring up the Layer Style window and apply a Color Overlay and Drop Shadow. You can customize these settings as needed.

Repeat these steps to create three more 'P' layers, duplicating each one five times to the right and five times downward. This will give your text a stacked effect.

Now it's time to add some gradients to our document. Create a new layer by clicking on 'Layer' > 'New' > 'Layer.' Fill this layer with any color you prefer, and set the fill to 0%. Double-click on this layer to bring up the Layer Style window and apply a gradient overlay.

To finish off our text effect, let's add a stroke. Create a new layer by clicking on 'Layer' > 'New' > 'Layer.' Fill this layer with any color you prefer, and set the fill to 0%. Double-click on this layer to bring up the Layer Style window and apply a Bevel Effect with a Stroke.

And that's it! You now have a 3D comic book text effect using Adobe Photoshop CC. Experiment with different fonts, colors, and gradients to create your own unique look.
